What is Nutrition?

It is hard to care about something, such as what you put in your mouth, if you don't have a grasp on why it matters. Gaining a basic understanding of what happens after you eat something can help you make better choices every day. Here are a few of my favorite sites that really break down what nutrition is and help me explain it to my loved ones:

 

Get the basics - Washington State University has a site with some amazing information they provide for their students about general health. Their information is simple, succinct, and easy to understand. My personal favorite part is their Nutrition Basics tab, but I also appreciate their overview on healthy living, the information on physical activity they provide, and the abundance of links to credible sources for more information. This is my go-to site when I have a question and I am excited to share it with you!  

Breaking it down - The processes that happen before, during, and after eating or drinking can seem extremely complicated, even to people in the Health and Wellness field. Terms like ingestion, absorption, and digestion aren't as perplexing as they might sound. Here are a few great resources that Keep it Simple and Succinct.

  • If you are a visual person (like yours truly) and prefer to learn via video, here is a great one to start! This 5 minute TedEd production gives a great overview of the digestive process. 

  • For a bit more of an academic feel, Lumen Learning has a short course in their Boundless Biology series that explains the digestive process in an easy to understand read.
